There’s nothing more frustrating than getting into your car, turning the key (or pressing the button), and… nothing happens. If your car won’t start in the UK—especially during colder months or after it’s been sitting for a while—it can be due to a number of common issues. Before you call your recovery service, here are a few things you can check yourself.
1. Flat or Weak Battery
The most common reason a car won’t start is a weak or flat battery. If you hear a clicking sound or the dashboard lights are dimmed, your battery could be a problem.
What to check:
- Check the battery terminals for any corrosion or connections which have come loose.
- Are the lights or radio working? If not, your battery is likely flat.
- If you can, try jump-starting the car with appropriate jump leads or a compatible power pack.
Tip: Batteries typically last 3–5 years. If yours is older, consider getting a replacement.
2. Faulty Starter Motor
If your battery seems to be working but the engine doesn’t turn over properly, the issue could stem from your car’s starter motor. The starter engages the engine when you turn the ignition key.
Signs of a faulty starter motor:
- Intermittent starting issues
- One loud click with no engine turnover
- Lights and electrics work, but the engine won’t engage
In this case, you’ll likely need a mechanic or recovery vehicle to help fix or replace your starter motor.
3. Fuel Problems
Whilst obvious, if your car won’t start, it’s sensible to check your fuel level. Running out of fuel is very common and when you’re in a rush it’s easy to forget to fill up.
Other fuel-related issues which can cause problems:
- Clogged fuel filter
- Fuel pump failure
- Water in the fuel, especially with diesel in winter
Check: Does the fuel gauge show enough petrol or diesel? If you’re parked on a slope with low fuel, it may struggle to get enough fuel to start.
4. Key Fob or Immobiliser Issues
Modern cars rely on electronic keys in order to start. If the fob battery is dead, or the immobiliser system malfunctions, your car won’t be able to start.
Try:
- Replacing the fob battery
- Using a spare key
- Locking/unlocking the car again
