Getting your car service during the Coronavirus lockdown

Life habits have changed pretty rapidly in the UK over the last few weeks due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Essential travel is still possible for key workers and for the general public to carry out essentials such as food shopping. So what happens when you need to get a car service during the Coronavirus lockdown? Read on and we’ll explain what you currently can do at this unprecedented time.

Are garages and MOT test centres still open?

Despite the closure of many shops and showrooms, car garages, service centres and MOT stations are allowed to stay open. This is to help keep NHS staff and the general public using their cars safely on UK roads. Naturally there will be distinct changes to the usual methods of getting your car serviced which we’ve become accustomed to. Firstly, some garages will be using fewer staff during these times, depending on the safe distancing measures to enable a safe working environment, plus staff may need to self-isolate should they themselves show symptoms. Secondly, to prevent unnecessary contact with the public, customers are now being given new ways to drop their cars off for repairs or MOTs, by either requesting pick-ups, dropping keys off through letterboxes, and settling payments over the phone and online. Many garage staff are also wearing gloves and covering seats to help minimise any risks of transmission according to guidelines. Here at MCM Garage for instance, we’re cleaning steering wheels, door handles, keys and more to keep you safe.

Will repairs take longer?

Given the changes that are occurring, finding replacement parts for your vehicle could also take longer than normal. However knowing that many of us are staying at home this shouldn’t cause too much trouble but where NHS staff are involved garages may still be able to offer courtesy cars should there not be a fleet replacement, keeping them on the road. Garages should be able to keep you up-to-date with your repairs and get your car back on the road as soon as they possibly can.

Check your local garage is open

We’d recommend calling or emailing your local garage to check whether they remain open and how soon they can fit you in. Like many businesses at this time, longer waits may apply as staff abide by distancing rules which are in place to keep both customers and workers safe during this uncertain time.
