It’s important to make sure that you replace your car’s spark plugs at recommended car servicing intervals – check with your manufacturer or handbook for this information. Many forget about the importance of the spark plug when starting a vehicle but it’s a vital component which is usually cheap and quick to replace. Our guide will help you diagnose spark plug problems you might be having with your car.
Noticeable engine struggle when idle
You should be aware of a normal engine sound when it’s idle (you’re in neutral and not touching the accelerator pedal) – it’s usually a constant sound. If you notice more vibrations than normal and the idling engine sounds like it’s not constant then spark plugs could be an issue and you should get them checked out.
Difficult to start car
You’ll need a spark to start the car’s ignition system and if your spark plugs are bad you’re likely to get nowhere fast. Of course, issues with a car failing to start can be one of many things such as a flat battery, no fuel or worn spark plugs. In fact faulty spark plugs can make your battery go flat eventually, so if you’ve discounted other problems then get your spark plugs checked out.
Misfiring car
A possible sign of faulty spark plugs could be misfiring which is usually signalled by a stuttering engine sound which is quite noticeable. Misfiring will not only cause your engine sound to be abnormal but also use up more fuel as the engine occasionally fails to burn all of the fuel in it’s cylinders.
Poor acceleration
You should notice instantly when your car isn’t accelerating as it should. You might find it’s sluggish when speeding up your car, or worse it doesn’t accelerate much at all. Although it could point to a multitude of issues, bad spark plugs could be one cause which you may want to check out. It’s definitely a good sign to get your car serviced and checked out.
